A simple method to work out a daily budget for a trip, with the costs people most often forget.
Looking for more detail? Our full guide covers this topic in depth, with step-by-step advice and sources.
1. Split fixed and daily costs
Fixed costs are paid once: flights, insurance, visas and vaccinations. Daily costs repeat: accommodation, food, local transport, activities.
2. Research real prices
Check a few hostels or hotels on the dates you want, local transport fares and typical meal prices. Recent traveller reports help more than old blog posts.
3. Build the daily figure
Add accommodation, three meals, transport and one paid activity. Then add 10 to 20% for extras.
Costs people forget
- Bank and cash machine fees.
- Phone data.
- Tourist taxes added to hotel bills.
- Laundry, toiletries and SIM cards.
- Tips where they are expected.
- Travel to and from airports.
4. Track as you go
Note spending daily in an app or notebook. If you overspend one day, balance it with a cheaper day.
5. Keep an emergency fund
Keep money aside, or a card with available credit, for emergencies such as a missed flight. Travel insurance with good medical cover is essential.
Check the exchange rate
Exchange rates move. Use a current rate when planning and allow for changes on longer trips.
